My Most Common Questions, Answered
What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy and How Does it Work?
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis or ‘trance’ to resolve problems that arise in the mind. It is thought that 90% of our behaviour is controlled by the subconscious, so we can often find ourselves having unhelpful thoughts, impulses or strong feelings which override our rational, conscious mind. By using hypnosis the therapist is able to work directly with the subconscious to help the client make the changes they want, by letting go of the beliefs which underlie their problems and accepting new beliefs and behaviours instead Cognitive Hypnotherapy combines ideas from the schools of Hypnotherapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Evolutionary Psychology and Positive Psychology to form a powerful way of changing unwanted behaviours or ways of thinking. We believe that just as each client is truly unique, the way we each experience our problems is unique – therefore there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. In contrast to traditional hypnotherapy there are no set scripts, I tailor each session and write each script for you as an individual, allowing the most effective change to take place in the shortest time possible. We work together to help you achieve your solution so that you’re making your own changes, whilst I’m there to support and guide you.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Most people can be hypnotised, but only if they want to be. Contrary to what many people think, hypnosis is a natural state that the majority of people drift in and out of naturally every day (eg. driving home from work and not having the slightest recollection of the journey).
Can Cognitive Hypnotherapy help me?
If your problem has a psychological element and you’re committed to change then the likelihood is that hypnotherapy will help you. That said, it’s important to remember that it isn’t a magic cure. You need to have a genuine desire to change and you must be willing to work in partnership with me to achieve your aim. I can then guide you to make changes to create a bespoke ‘solution’ to replace your problem so that a successful outcome is very likely.
Does Hypnotherapy Work Online?
Yes it does! If you have a good internet connection then hypnosis works just as well via a webcam as it does if you’re in the room with me, and means that as long as you have somewhere private to connect from, you don’t need to leave home for your sessions.
I use a secure online platform called Zoom, which is very easy to install and use.
Online therapy can be particularly helpful for clients who suffer with anxiety or those who live too far afield or prefer not to travel to Leeds, and it means that I’m able to work with you wherever you happen to be in the world. There are obviously some technical considerations to bear in mind with online therapy, but I outline these clearly before therapy starts so we’re set up in the best way for our sessions.
How will I feel during hypnosis?
You will feel pleasantly relaxed as though you are in a trance-like dreamy state, but you can expect to remain aware and in control during treatment. You may find yourself daydreaming or even drifting into sleep and it’s fine if this happens, as your subconscious will still be listening and absorbing the hypnotic suggestions.
What if I don't wake up?
Trance is a completely natural state that we move in and out of every day so there is absolutely no need to worry about not ‘waking up’. If you were left in an induced trance, you would either fall asleep and wake up naturally, or get bored, return naturally to a normal waking state and leave!
Can you make me do anything I don't want to?
No, while you are in trance a Hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything that you don’t want to do, or anything that goes against your sense of right or wrong.
You are in control at all times whilst I guide you to make the changes necessary to achieve the result that you want.
I'm interested in working with you, what do I do next?
I offer an initial exploratory Skype or Zoom session to all prospective clients so I can get a good understanding of where you’re at and whether I can help you.
There’s no obligation to go on and book a package of sessions, as this session will allow us to determine whether it makes sense to work together and how that might be structured. If I think I can help you, I’ll explore and recommend options for working together that work for you. If you are interested in finding out more, you can contact me to set up a conversation.
